150 Years of Graduate Medical Education
    at Rhode Island Hospital

Rhode Island Hospital's commitment to educating the world's future physicians has always been at the heart of its mission. Staci Fischer, MD, explains how graduate medical education has changed over the years—especially in the decades since the mid-twentieth century.
    A Commitment to Excellence

Lifespan faculty employs a method of teaching that balances the desires of our patients-superb, safe, compassionate care, with what is needed to create effective residents-increasing levels of authority, autonomy and decision making.

Now more than ever, teaching faculty must help trainees ensure that the experience of graduate medical education remains transformative, that it transforms novice practitioners into physicians able to think, act, and keep their focus on the ultimate goal of providing the best and most appropriate care for patients no matter what the setting or circumstances.

Rhode Island Hospital and The Miriam Hospital are committed to excellence in graduate medical education. Our commitment is demonstrated by:

    • Compliance with the institutional requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)

    • Support for programs in reaching compliance with ACGME program requirements

    • Fostering an environment which encourages education, research and scholarly activity

    • Provision of appropriate resources for graduate medical education
