Important Prevention Practices for HIV and Sexually Transmitted Diseases

How we can help stop transmission of HIV and STDs in Rhode Island: Screening for HIV and sexually transmitted diseases should be routine for all patients, especially if sexually active.

This presentation is offered to healthcare professionals in Rhode Island to help reverse increasing trends in HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in certain risk groups. If you are involved in primary care medicine, pediatrics, OB-GYN, internal medicine and emergency medicine, are a member of a college health center, AAFP, AAP, ACP and RIMS, you are strongly encouraged to participate.

Approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ and Infection Control Credit, a required area of section 6.0; 6.2.1 RI CME re-licensure.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Identify tools for sexual history taking that improve communication with sexually active patients, especially high risk groups including youth and those who identify as being lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning

  • Determine HIV and STD screening recommendations

  • Improve partnering with the Rhode Island Department of Health and improve awareness of available resources such as case reporting and partner notification services
