  • About Our Midwives

  • A certified nurse-midwife (CNM) is a registered nurse who has completed a post-graduate program in nurse-midwifery and is nationally certified by the American College of Nurse-Midwives.  The midwifery service at Ob-Gyn Associates has been providing personalized care to women in our community for more than 30 years.

We provide outpatient care at several locations in Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Births are attended at Women & Infants Hospital, both in the Alternative Birthing Center and the traditional Labor and Delivery Unit.

      Our 2012 Intervention Rates

    • Primary or first time c-section: 10.8%
    • Total cesarean section: 12%
    • Assisted deliveries (like, forceps or vacuum): 4%
    • Alternative Birth Center deliveries: 18%
    • VBAC success rate: 75%

In addition to maternity care, we offer well-woman gynecologic care throughout the lifespan and a full range of family planning options. Whether we are providing birth control options, gynecologic care, preconception counseling or maternity care, we view the midwife-patient relationship as a partnership. We want each woman to be a fully informed participant in her care decisions.

We share a philosophy that views pregnancy and birth as an essentially normal, healthy process, and we honor them as monumental, life-altering events for women and their families.
When pregnancy and birth progress normally, as is the case for the majority of women, we provide all maternity care independently. We are highly trained in recognizing signs of complications, and when they do arise, we collaborate with our consulting obstetricians.

We pride ourselves in providing ample time during prenatal visits to get to know women, answer questions, involve partners and siblings, and focus on the emotional as well as physical aspects of growing a healthy baby.

During the labor and birth experience, we provide personalized, family-centered care and hands-on labor support. Many women who desire “natural” childbirth seek out midwifery care, and we are enthusiastic and skilled at giving women the support and encouragement they need to give birth without medications.

We also care for many women who plan to use pain medications or epidural anesthesia during labor. We support each woman’s informed choices and our goal is to help each woman have the type of birth experience she desires.

We offer the vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) option, and we are a doula-friendly practice.

We look forward to meeting you and answering any questions you have about our midwifery service.
